TPPT - Knowledge about the new labeling

Customer information

The entire lubricant industry is affected by the recent reclassification of TPPT[1]. This results in comprehensive changes to the labeling of lubricants.[2] Due to the widespread use of TPPT, a wide range of the lubricants market is currently adapting the new product labeling. At setral® this applies to numerous products.

What is TPPT?

TPPT is the abbreviation for O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate. Worldwide it has been used in lubricants for decades as an EP/AW[3] additive and is also included in additive packages. As such it increases the load-carrying characteristics of lubricants and reduces wear susceptibility.

Change in labeling

In general, the environmental risk was rated higher. This applies even for small quantities. Therefore, affected lubricants must be provided by all lubricant suppliers with a note regarding their impact on aquatic organisms (usually with GHS09 and one of the hazard phrases H410, 411 or H412[4]) and labeled as ADR[5]. Since the last update of the SVHC[6] candidate list, this substance has been included for the first time. This has an impact on the safety data sheets.

Has the lubricant changed?

Only the labeling has changed. The formulation or manufacturing process of the lubricant has not changed. However, lubricants containing TPPT must now be labeled differently. We are working on product-specific solutions for friendlier labeling in the future, meaning fewer danger symbols and H-phrases (hazard statements).

H1 and TPPT

The ECHA[7] labeling and the H1 standard, which is used to assess lubricants in food-related areas, have no direct correlation. This means that the same substance must actually have a label on the safety data sheet and is H1 registered at the same time. This is the case with TPPT, which has been a popular additive in H1 lubricants.

Successes with TPPT-free formulation

Most of the affected food-grade products have been reformulated and converted. Further products, including non-food products, are already being worked on by our development department and are nearing completion. In general, we care for formulations with less labeling requirements and comparable performance. You can always find the latest information on our homepage setral.com.
