Dependentd on the alloy, steel tend to oxidize under oxygen containing air - this means they corrode. Further influences like high humidity, acidic or salty environments also promote corrosion. Typical anti-corrosion agents create a protective coat on the bare steel and thus protect the surface. There are oily, grease-like and waxy corrosion preventives.
